Makarand Kundale had his initial training under his father Madhavrao Kundale, an organ and harmonium player. Thereafter, he learnt for eleven years from vocalist Nirmala Gogate. He took special guidance in the art of accompanying Nataysangeet or Marathi stage songs from noted musician Bhalchandra Pendharkar. His participation in various thematic programmes conceptualized and presented by eminent scholar-musician and ethnomusicologist Dr. Ashok Ranade, has been of immense educational value to him. He has also taken special training in rare raags from Arvind Pilgaonkar.
He has had the privilege of providing harmonium accompaniment to many leading vocalists and has also played for many Marathi Sangeet Nataks.
