The contents of this volume have been culled from the script and notes written for the Pt. Bhatkhande Memorial Lectures delivered by Ashok Da. Ranade at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai, on April 4 and 5, 1998.

The Pt. Bhatkhande Memorial Lectures were instituted in 1992 by the Indian Musicological Society as a fitting tribute to the late Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande, a pioneering musicologist and music educationist of modern India. These lectures are visualized as significant contribution by an eminent scholar of music theory and inter-disciplinary studies, to be published as a part of the project. This publication is the result of such an endeavor.
