Description

The Radha-Krishna theme has been an integral part of traditional Kathak repertoire and it is best represented through the thumri form. Essentially a North Indian vocal genre, thumri texts have lent themselves to dance interpretation, with the Kathak dancer interpreting each word or line in myriad ways. The interpretation often begins with abhinaya that corresponds to the literal meaning of the song-text, but the dancer gradually uses the text in a metaphorical manner to suggest hidden meanings and sub-texts. Kathak dancer Manjari Chaturvedi performs abhinaya to a thumri on this album.
