Gurvinder Singh

Gurvinder Singh studied filmmaking at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, graduating in 2001. Since 2002, he has been documenting the Sufi music traditions of Punjab, under a grant received from India Foundation for the Arts (IFA). The documentation has involved field recordings of music on digital audio-video and in terms of content, emphasized the syncretic tradition of narrating kissas, or folk legends, at various shrines, cutting across religious practices. The documentation also resulted in a film on one of the folk singers he documented during the project. The film titled "Pala" (DV/2003/83 mins) was part of the Vikalp festival held in protest against censorship at the Mumbai International Film Festival, 2004, and is being screened at various venues in India. Currently, under another grant from IFA and supported by the Archives and Research Center for Ethnomusicology (ARCE), Gurgaon, he is working towards creating an archive of Punjabi Sufi music on the Internet and doing further field recordings in Punjab, besides forming a not-for profit society to promote the task of documenting and promoting ethno music.
