Wadali Brothers
Popularly known as the Wadali Brothers, Puranchand and Pyarelal Wadali are exponents of Sufi music. The two singers from Punjab have a diverse repertoire that includes qawwali, kaafi, bhajan, shabad and ghazal. Their forte is considered the Sufiana qalaam by Bulle Shah, Baba Farid, and other Sufi and Bhakti saints.
Born in Guru ki Wadali, Amritsar, a village consecrated by the fifth master Guru Arjan Dev, a great musician himself, the two brothers learnt from celebrated maestros like Durga Das and Bade Ghulam Ali Saheb of Patiala Gharana. Steeped in the rich tradition of Punjab, the Wadalis have received several awards, including the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1991, Tulsi Award in 1998, and the Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003.
