Purshottam Walawalkar
One of the senior-most harmonium players in India, Purshottam Walawalkar grew up in a musical environment. As a child, he was exposed to the performances of his father Madhavrao Walawalkar and renowned artistes like Bal Gandharva in Marathi theatrical productions. Later, he received training in harmonium from Govindrao Tembe, Vitthalrao Korgaonkar and Hanmantrao Walvekar. He also imbibed subtleties of vocal music from Shivrambuwa Vaze and Kagalkarbuwa. Purshottam Walawalkar has accompanied virtually all the leading exponents of vocal music. He has travelled widely for performances and has been recorded extensively by various recording labels. He is also known for his harmonium solo recitals. Despite having crossed the age of eighty, Walawalkar even now has a busy concert and teaching schedule.
